Website accessibility

Waterman's website is developed in line with industry accessibility standards. The design is developed to be viewable in any standards compliant browser whilst the content should be accessibile to all users regardless of ability.

Access Keys

Access keys are keyboard shortcuts that provide links to important areas of the site. Windows users can press ALT + an access key, followed by RETURN for those using Microsoft Internet Explorer. Apple Macintosh users can press CONTROL + an access key.

This website uses the following standard access keys:

Access key A - About page
Access key C - Cinema page
Access key T - Theatre page
Access key E - Exibition page
Access key I - Children page
Access key L - Live Events page
Access key K - Take Part page
Access key O - Contact page

Navigation menus are marked up as HTML lists. This ensures that the number of links in the list is read out at the start and it can be skipped easily.
We have checked the site's font and background colour combination against the different colour blindness conditions and ensured that all information is still clear.
Cascading style sheets (CSS) are used to set the colour and size of the text within each page. The formatting can be overridden:
- in MS Explorer by selecting Tools - Internet Options - Accessibility
- in Netscape / Firefox by selecting Edit - Preferences - Appearance - Fonts
- alternatively select 'view' then 'text size' in your browser to adjust the size of the text

Alt tags

All images used on this site include descriptive attributes. Purely decorative graphics include empty alt attributes. "Alt" tags are meant to provide a text alternative to images for text-based browsers and screen readers.

Website navigation system

This website is designed to be viewed by many different people. The website navigation system allows for easy and intuitive navigation between the different sections of a site. The key features of the website navigation system are given below:

The user is always aware of which page he / she is viewing. Users can get confused about which page they are viewing so it is important that there are visual clues indicating the current page. The navigation entry for the current page is coloured differently or grayed out.

Here is the color scheme used within the website.
Users can see the full range of pages of each section they can visit located on the left hand side of the website.
"Visited" anchor tag pseudo class used on this site to clearly indicate to the user which pages he / she has visited.
A breadcrumb trail is provided so that the user is aware of which pages he / she has already seen.
