Mapping Brentford -
Come and see what you and Christian have created between you at the Private View on Thursday 12 June, from 6-8pm in the Gallery, when he will unveil the map
This is a list of all the available activities that have been used on the workshop days.
Drawing Provocations
This is a series of drawing sheets with questions such as: "Draw the most dangerous people in this area" etc. This is a fantastic general purpose activity for young and old that gets good result every time. Unlimited numbers no booking, it can work as drop in activity and the sheets can be present in the gallery all the time.
Bio Mapping
This activity involves people going for a walk in the local area strapped to a portable lie detector as well as a GPS. When people come back they can see an emotional map of their journey and talk about what happened to them and annotate their journey in Google Earth. This activity works well with adults, in particular people with a long and strong engagement with that place. This activity takes 3 hours and can only be done by 10 people at a time. We need definite bookings for this event
Noise Mapping
This event involves people going out to particular chosen areas and measuring the decibel levels there as well as writing down their subjective emotional response to this sound. This activity is useful for individuals or groups who have environmental concerns about the local area or have a very direct interpretation of quality of life. Noise is a good way of talking about car/plane pollution. This activity can be carried about by max. 12 people working in pairs (6 decibel meters).
Sensory Deprivation Mapping
This activity involves people walking in a very local area (often just 1 km radius) from the project base while blind folded and deafened. One person leads the other who is also recording their sensory experiences in textual form in relation to particular locations. When they come back to the gallery they enter these observations onto Google Earth. This project works very well with school classes, young people aged 12-21 but could also be interesting with other groups. A good group might be architects or developers.
Affect Browser
This activity involves collecting texts about the local area. These could be articles from local newspapers as well as local websites and then feeding them into the Affect Browser website. The software creates a digest tag cloud of the emotive words being used and gives a sense of how particular texts are positioned in relation to Brentford. This activity can be an organised event with max.
Community Journalism
This activity involves people going out into the local area and interviewing or surreptitiously recording people's conversations with the aid of their mobile phone or a voice recorder to get a sense of what the local concerns are
Issue Networks
This involves a group of people sitting in the gallery brain storming on the issues and challenges of the local area while the Christian and Dani are pulling up local information off the internet. What are the local issues? How are they connected. Where are the pressure points? We will be using Omni Graffle software to draw issue networks that connect people, places and concepts during the workshops. We will be printing maps from the large format printer that can be scribbled on and then scanned again for a continuous participatory workflow. Unlimited numbers no booking, it can work as drop in activity and the software can be available in the gallery all the time.
Brentford Mark-making / Brentford Typeface design
This activity involves making visual marks and symbols to represent Brentford specific landmarks and issues. For example designing an icon for the local incinerator or bad politicians etc. We will be printing maps from the large format printer that can be scribbled on and then scanned again for a continuous participatory workflow. This is a specialised activity that will work well with design students and visually sensitised people.
Local Portraits Landscape Pictures
This activity can happen any time and involves Dani and Christian being out in Brentford and taking pictures of local people the environment
