Community | Refugee Arts
Our Refugee Arts programme is aimed at helping refugee communities find a place in British society
Research has shown that involvement in cultural and artistic activities can be a very effective way of different cultures and societies engaging with one another and of helping to integrate people who might otherwise feel isolated and alienated.
Culture can help communities to express themselves. It provides a common language between people who don't share the same experiences. And it helps to strengthen cultural identity, important in displaced groups.
Watermans' Refugee Arts programme is designed to contribute to these objectives in West London. It provides opportunities for communities' expression and development and support for artists by showcasing and promoting their work as it develops.
We shall continue our successful Refugee Arts Forum
We have been awarded funding for a full-time Community Arts Facilitator to focus on working with different groups of refugees and asylum seekers across West London, building on the programme we have developed with this community over the past 10 years. This project is supported by the Baring Foundation
