"An extraordinary retelling of Genet's classic play set in ancient India"

When the mistress is away, the maids will play.

Two maids in service to a Madame pass the moments of their day play acting. As the line between fantasy and reality begins to disintegrate, their games take a deadly turn.  Jealousy, resentment, sexual tension and betrayal converge in this classic French thriller

Jean Genet was a close friend of Sartre. The Maids was his first and some believe best play. It was inspired by a famous murder in the 1930's when the Papin sisters turned on their abusive and exploitative employer. It caused a scandal when it opened in Paris in 1947, for its stark portrayal of seething working-class discontent

The Maids challenges audiences to reconsider intimate female relationships and the origins of the violence and passion that directs the actions of the central characters

In this startling new interpretation by director Samir Bhamra the setting has been transposed to India, where he finds remarkable parallels in Indian culture not least from his own experiences

During the first week the roles of the maids will be played by men as Genet intended.

Robby Khela plays Claire. Robby was a finalist in BBC Asian Network's ‘Unsung' Competition and has recently returned from Indian Idol 4 after being selected by famous bollywood personalities Anu Malik and Javed Akhtar to represent the UK in Mumbai.

Robby and Jeremy Williams who plays Solange. Madame is played by Pritesh Chauhan

The Maids is director Samir Bhamra's latest production. He has transposed Jean Genet's famous story into 19th century India where he finds the relationship between the maids and their mistress resonates with the culture and his own   experiences before he arrived in England

During the second week, women will play the roles as has become more common

Bhavika Mistry plays Clare. Kanira Shah plays Madame and Zafreen plays Solange
