"A word that broke an Empire"

To mark the 60th anniversary of Indian independence, Watermans is bringing the hit play Sammy! from India

Written by Partap Sharma, Sammy! was the big winner at the 2006 Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards. The play won Best Director for high-profile theatre personality Lillete Dubey, Best Actor for Joy Sengupta and Best Script for Partap Sharma

Sammy - derived from the Hindi word Swami - was an insult thrown at Indians in South Africa where Gandhi spent the first part of his adult life. What South Africans did not realize was what swami really stands for: master. Quietly smiling to himself he resolutely determined to turn this abuse into an adequate description...

Sammy! traces Gandhi's transformation from young naïve protester in South Africa to the Mahatma, a shrewd politician and enlightened person. This acclaimed international theatre production is a homage to Mahatma Gandhi, the man's whose influence changed politics forever.

Primetime's production was heralded for transcending the Mahatma portrayed in history books, highlighting the human aspects to the freedom struggle.
