The cinematic beastliness continues at Bad Film Club with Nicko and Joe providing a live commentary over some terrible crimes in movie making. This time they are bringing with them the "soon to be classic" bad movie MEGA SHARK vs GIANT OCTOPUS.
Debbie Gibson, yes THAT Debbie Gibson, plays a marine biologist who spots an enormous shark and octopus frozen in ice while on a visit to the Antarctic. So when a Japanese oil rig is attacked by what one survivor describes as a really big octopus and massive shark sightings are recorded around America she begins to suspect an ice thaw has released the terrible creatures. (Global warming has a lot to answer for.)
These colossal prehistoric beasts begin wreaking highly unbelievable and poorly realised low-budget havoc with Mega Shark taking a bite at the Golden Gate Bridge and bringing down a plane in mid flight. Can Gibson and her fellow maverick biologists save the day by using science?
Although something of a cult classic with over a million hits on YouTube when it was released in 2009, Peter Whittle in The Sunday Times thought it was unwatchable. There is no doubt however of the ambition of some of the stunts and special effects - its just a shame that they weren't matched by the production budget.
