About this event

Akademi’s SPARKPLUGS initiative presents powerful, ambitious and original work of early career South Asian choreographers, by providing platforms and introducing audiences to new work while promoting the diversity of South Asian Dance and celebrating its place in the UK. This unique evening presents Re-rooted Collective and Morph Dance Company.

The double bill is ignited by ReRooted Dance Collective’s dynamic solos and a newly created group piece comprising elements of three distinct Indian Classical dance styles – Kathak, Odissi and Bharatanatyam. These experimental works are shaped by a collaborative approach grounded in peer mentoring and explore dance with an emphasis on improvisation alongside vocal accompaniment.

This will be followed by ‘Fly From’. Choreographed by Saju Hari and performed by Subhash Viman Gorania, it is a solo performance inspired by the ‘standing man of Taksim Square’ in Istanbul and looks at the fight against resistance while searching for ultimate liberation and enlightenment.

About the Artists

Founded in 1979 by the legendary Tara Rajkumar, Akademi is the UK’s leading South Asian Dance organisation, capturing imaginations through inspiring storytelling and unique spectacle. Creating vital talent pathways for the next generation of dance artists, Akademi also takes dance to the heart of the community, offering life-affirming experiences for those who are disadvantaged, disengaged or isolated.

In 2019-20, Akademi is marking its 40th anniversary with an ambitious programme of year-long celebratory events in London, showcasing the breadth of its work and highlighting some of the best South Asian dance talent associated with Akademi’s history in the UK and globally.

Rerooted Dance Collective is a performance-choreography ensemble upholding their Indian classical dance heritage while carving out a unique space in the arts scene nurturing curiosity and experimentation. Artists – Shivaangee Agrawal, Swati Seshadri, Elena Catalano, Pallavi Basak Vijay, Meera Patel, Parbati Chaudhury

Subhash Viman Gorania is a British choreographer and dancer, who is developing a distinct style, giving his dance an unorthodox and quirky edge. He has variety, unpredictability and a strong stage presence that commands attention. He was a Dx Choreography Award Artist in 2017.

Saju Hari trained in contemporary dance and Kalaripayattu (martial art) with Jayachandran at Attakkalari, but has lived and worked in the UK since 2003. He has danced with Imlata Dance Company, The Bedlam Dance Company and Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company. He toured in Akram Khan Company’s “Bahok”, a collaboration with National Ballet of China
