About this event

A very special double bill featuring the music of Nina Simone by Fringe First award winner Apphia Campbell.

Following sell-out seasons in the West End, Shanghai, New York, Edinburgh and in London at Wilton’s Music Hall, Apphia Campbell brings her acclaimed play with music, Black is the Colour of my Voice, to Watermans for one show only followed by a cabaret performance of Nina Simone’s music.

Inspired by the life of Nina Simone, Black Is The Color Of My Voice follows a successful jazz singer and civil rights activist seeking redemption after the untimely death of her father. She reflects on the journey that took her from a young piano prodigy destined for a life in the service of the church, to a renowned jazz vocalist at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement.

In the second half, Campbell showcases her outstanding vocals in Soul Sessions – a celebration of the brilliant music of Nina Simone. Receiving high praise from critics all over the world, this unique show gives you the opportunity to travel through time and experience this stunning music how it was supposed to be.

Soul Sessions features full-length renditions of songs that are featured in the accompanying show, Black Is The Color Of My Voice. For this cabaret-style performance, Apphia’s outstanding vocals will be accompanied by a live piano.

About Apphia Campbell

Apphia is a well-versed performer and the creator of both shows. She was born in Florida but moved to New York where she performed off-Broadway. She then went on to live in China where she sang blues, jazz and pop in various venues before creating the Play The Spotlight Theatre Company.

In 2013 she wrote her critically acclaimed piece, ‘Black Is The Color Of My Voice’ and opened in Shanghai to rave reviews before performing at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2014 where it sold out and has been touring the UK ever since. In 2017, her new show with Meredith Yarbrough, ‘Woke’, was presented as part of the Made In Scotland Showcase, won a Scotsman Fringe First, a Highly Commended award from Amnesty International, and was shortlisted for The Filipa Bragança Award and Scottish Art Club Theatre Award.
