Mirror Cities: Into the Earth

Thursday 20 March – Thursday 3 April

Bell Square

A new visual installation by London spatial artist, Tendayi Vine launches on Thursday 20 March, 6pm.

Mirror Cities: Into the Earth is an outdoor visual artwork that builds on the artist’s most recent exhibition at Watermans exploring the significance of the Gutta Percha tree in the development of global communications – the tree’s sap was used to make the casings that wrapped the cables laid across the Atlantic in the 19th Century.

Tendayi Vine’s interactive installation builds on research into the Gutta Percha tree as a feature of the internet's physical landscape. Human habitats are simultaneously ancient and new and the meaning we make from them is constantly reshaped by human technological dependencies. Into the Earth explores the infrastructures of digital and virtual spaces by framing them as imagined environments - images of landscape shaped by myth, story and superstition.

This installation is part of the EU funded Artcast4D project which enables artists to explore the use of interactive technologies in their work and utilises AAASeed software to drive the interactive elements

Mirror Cities: Into the Earth is a project networked with Hounslow’s twin town Issy-les-Moulineaux in France where the artist Jaime Jimenez’s project explores the principle of audio-visual performance: mapping the results, by mixing painting, video and live music with drawing. Visual relays between the two locations will be shared, with Tendayi Vine’s work in Hounslow also being seen in France and vice versa.

Tendayi Vine is a spatial practitioner interested in invisible landscapes, systems, and the shifting boundaries that define our material and immaterial habitats. Her research is driven by a fascination with the virtual and the digital, resulting in outputs that span across audio/ visual installation and interactive workshops. She is currently teaching as a Senior Lecturer at University of the Arts London. Alongside her practice she has worked as a designer for events, exhibitions and experiences across the UK and Tendayi is based in London. You can find out more information about Tendayi Vine at www.tkvine.com

AAASeed is a versatile 2D / 3D real-time engine developed and used by Mâa (Emmanuel Mâa Berriet) since the last century. The open-source project is designed to build installations of various complexity and sizes. Supported by European funding to go Open Source (ArtCast4D ), AAASeed aims to enhance the way we interact with digital environments. AAASeed software allows artists, developers, and businesses to tap into the world of 3D real-time graphics and immersive experiences. AAASeed focuses now on three core applications: VJing – create captivating visuals that complement live performances; Data Product Visualizations – communicate complex data through clear, engaging visuals; Immersive Digital Installations – experience the fusion of art and technology in interactive environments.
