Jules A. Sykes has been a West London resident for over twenty years, and during that time she has collected images from the area – the old billboards and boats of Brentford, the deterioration of signage and layers of peeling paint along the High Street being her particular favourites. Some of these images are processed (desaturated/printed/overprinted/reversed etc) and then transferred to make mixed media collages and built up surfaces featuring human subjects.

Loss of identity, faded histories and lost souls are themes Jules A. Sykes has been working on for some time. This work reflects corrupted memories and a dislocation of people, places and objects. Such changes can cause chaos and yet, on another level, can create an absurd beauty. Leaving a place or a person can lead to a rediscovery of self, and the chance to see beauty in a decaying world left devastated by enforced change.

Based on lost communities and threadbare pasts, these layers of history are represented using a combination of text (mostly handwritten), found imagery, mixed media, drawing and photography. Peeling and ashen surfaces reveal a rejuvenated but melancholy beauty…

Bye. Gone.
