About this event

Maigret (15) - The legendary Gérard Depardieu brings to remarkable life one of the most beloved characters from 20th century crime fiction in Maigret.
It is Paris, 1953. The body of a beautiful young woman is discovered at Place Ventimille, dressed in an elegant evening gown. There is nothing to identify her, and no witnesses. Pensive and world-weary Inspector Jules Maigret (Depardieu) endeavours to piece together her story, and in doing so uncovers details about her past and character. Based on Georges Simenon's internationally best-selling novels.

About French Impressions

French Impressions is an opportunity for those interested in film, especially French film, to watch a movie and discuss it in a discussion led by our resident French film expert, Jon Davies.

About Jon Davies
Jon Davies has been presenting Watermans' popular French cinema club French Impressions for over 20 years, he's a Tutor in Current Film and Cinema at Morley College and an Associate of the British Film Institute, appointed in 1993. In French Impressions he lends his expert insight and relaxed conversational style to French cinema from across the spectrum and invites you to take part.

This programme includes the TALK at 1pm-2pm and a SCREENING OF THE FILM at 2.30pm. There is a small break to allow you to get some refreshments before watching the film and there is some time after the film to ask further questions.

Director and co-writer Patrice Leconte's script stays faithful to author Georges Simenon's tightly constructed original story, Maigret et la Jeune Morte, and the film's rich ochre visuals perfectly embody the elegance of the period.
