About this event

Learn about different dyeing techniques using natural and sustainable resources, with a focus on using dyes made from food waste at this free drop-in workshop at Chiswick House’s beautiful Kitchen Garden.

Led by Hounslow-based artist Alexis Parinas, this creative, colourful workshop will show you the wonderful colours that can be found in food and plants! We will be tie-dyeing with dyes made from onion skins, beetroot, red cabbage, turmeric, and avocado seeds. We will also be flower-pounding to create further colourful imprints on the fabric. The pieces produced at the workshop will be used by Alexis in an art installation that will tour Hounslow’s Libraries for up to two years.

This workshop forms part of Creative People & Places Hounslow’s heritage project ‘A Creative Community History of Hounslow’s Diaspora Food Markets’ that celebrates the heritage of Hounslow’s Food Markets and highlights the diverse communities who use them.

CPP Hounslow’s Visual Arts Programme has been awarded a substantial grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund for a new oral history and heritage project titled ‘A Creative Community History of Hounslow’s Diaspora Food Markets’ that celebrates the heritage of Hounslow’s Food Markets and highlighting the diverse diaspora communities who use them.

Throughout 2024 we will be collaborating with Hounslow-based artist Alexis Parinas to work with volunteers and local people to create a new archive of material that will form the basis of two new touring exhibitions that will be on display in London Borough of Hounslow Libraries from September 2024 as part of the Creative People & Places Hounslow Visual Arts Programme.

FREE, open to all, just turn up between 12pm - 3.30pm
