About this event
Our fortnightly online cinema club 'No Ticket Required' has been running since April 2020. It seeks out the interesting nuggets, forgotten gems (and maybe a few more recent box office smashes too) and gives you the chance to go deeper into film with our resident cinephile Jon Davies, often joined by an expert guest speaker.
Jon will introduce the film and director, and lead an informal discussion via Zoom: feel free to join in, or just listen in. All are welcome.
FILM CHOICE FOR MONDAY 8 MARCH
Lovers Rock tells a fictional story of young love at a blues party in 1980. The film is an ode to the romantic reggae genre called lovers rock, and to the black youth who found freedom and love in its sound at London house parties, at a time when they were unwelcome in white nightclubs.
WATCH Lovers Rock on BBC iPlayer for free here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000prjp/small-axe-series-1-lovers-rock
PLEASE NOTE WE WILL NOT BE SHOWING THE FILM AT THE DISCUSSION, SO YOU NEED TO WATCH IT BEFOREHAND.
About Jon Davies
Jon Davies has been presenting Watermans' popular French cinema club French Impressions for over 20 years, he's Tutor in Current Film and Cinema at Morley College and an Associate of the British Film Institute, appointed in 1993. In No Ticket Required he lends his expert insight and relaxed conversational style to cinema from across the spectrum and invites you to take part.
How No Ticket Required Works
Discussions take place on fortnightly Mondays at 8pm. By the Thursday prior, Watermans will release a short video from Jon Davies introducing the film. It can be watched on Watermans' website or YouTube. Jon will give a bit of background to the week's film and ask some questions to get you thinking. Watch Jon's video by clicking 'Play Trailer' above.
You'll then have until Monday to watch the film at home on an easily-accessible streaming platform such as Curzon Home Cinema or BBC iPlayer and to book your space on the video call.
On Monday at 8pm, we'll get together on via video calling platform Zoom for a short presentation from Jon and a chance to discuss the film... as well as vote on what the next week's film should be.
Don't worry if you're no Zoom expert: it's very simple. We will send you a link by 5pm on the day of the event, and our friendly box office team will be available from 7.30pm to help you get online if you have any problem at all. Please note you only need to book one ticket per screen, even if more of you are joining on that screen.
