About this event

Charlotte Saluard joins Jon Davies for the first in a special season of guest speakers at our fortnightly cinema club, No Ticket Required. Charlotte Saluard has been Head of Programming and Exhibition at Cine Lumiere at the Institut Francais, then head of distribution at Modern Films. She is now at Curzon Theatrical and joins us to discuss the films of Celine Sciamma and how 21st-century French cinema has dealt with the issues of our times, using 2004 film Girlhood and 2019’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire as a starting point.

La Haine back in the 90's opened many eyes to the problems of inner city living in France. Girlhood is that and more, because the themes of race, identity, gender and culture are all out under the microscope. Contrasting this, is Portrait of a Lady on Fire considering many similar issues through a historical lens.

WATCH GIRLHOOD HERE and WATCH PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE HERE (£4.99). You don't need to watch both films unless you want to, but to get the most out of the session we recommend you watch one before the No Ticket Required event.

This event is part of Film FeelsConnected, a UK-wide cinema season, supported by the National Lottery and BFI Film Audience Network. Explore all films and events at filmfeels.co.uk

No Ticket Required is a fortnightly online event. It's open to our audiences new and old and we look forward to seeing you there! Please book your free space on the 'book now' link on this page. Spaces are limited: book one space per screen joining (so if there are two or three of you joining on the same screen, you only need to book one space).

How No Ticket Required Works

Discussions take place on fortnightly Mondays at 8pm. By the Thursday prior, Watermans will release a short video from Jon Davies introducing the film. It can be watched on Watermans' website or YouTube. Jon will give a bit of background to the week's film and ask some questions to get you thinking. Watch Jon's video by clicking 'Play Trailer' above.

You'll then have until Monday to watch the film at home on an easily-accessible streaming platform such as Curzon Home Cinema or BBC iPlayer and to book your space on the video call.

PLEASE NOTE WE WILL NOT BE SHOWING THE FILM AT THE DISCUSSION, SO YOU NEED TO WATCH IT BEFOREHAND.

On Monday at 8pm, we'll get together on via video calling platform Zoom for a short presentation from Jon and a chance to discuss the film.

Don't worry if you're no Zoom expert: it's very simple. We will send you a link by 5pm on the day of the event, and our friendly box office team will be available from 7.30pm to help you get online if you have any problem at all.
