The Sweet Spot is an immersive installation that uses innovative technology to explore audience participation, discovery and creation; human interaction and collaboration; and identity in contemporary British society.

Sweet Spot Sting

Human-computer interaction technology will enable the positions of the participants to be captured and used to determine the quality and sound of the audio they hear. This audio will be based on a new, alternative arrangement of God Save the Queen. If all the participants congregate on the sweet spot – an unmarked point in the centre of the room – they will hear the pre-recorded track, crisply and clearly. If one, or more, participants move away from the sweet spot, or if one or more participants enter the space, their movement will alter the audio track. As a result, they will be able to create an infinitely changing soundscape. A real-time projection of the position of participants will be projected on the gallery wall, with a glowing circle to encourage participants to collectively discover and experience the sweet spot.

The Sweet Spot is the result of an exciting inter-disciplinary collaboration between a group of artists, musicians, producers and programmers.

Graeme Crowley – a London-based designer and artist, specialising in new media design, photography and multi-media installations – initiated and is leading the project. He is a principal of Tui Interactive Media, one of the UK’s most established digital agencies, and a founding member of The Café Society, an internet-based group of artists, who exhibit and organise gallery events and workshops around the world (see http://cafesociety.org/ )

The music will be arranged and recorded by the Mustard and Blood Orchestra – a collective of musicians from around the UK led by Johnny Nicholds. The instrumentation will be faithful to the original; the melodies and counter-melodies will remain, but it will be scored with unexpected instruments and arrangements to create a fresh and surprising twist.

Jake Pyne, a multi-disciplinary developer from London will be programming the piece (see www.jakepyne.co.uk). The post-production will be completed by established house and techno producer, Flicker (www.flickertracks.com).
